SOUTHERN OMO VALLEY

Experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in the Omo Valley, visiting tribes living off beaten areas, enjoying the night under the stars, and joining a traditional night dancing and learning about their history from the tribe elders. There are so many different kinds of tours you can do here in Omo Valley and I can customize your package according to your requirements and interests.  

We can cater to your interests and your schedule and can organize tours visiting many different tribes, including the Mursi, Benna, Bodi, Dassench, Karra, Hamar, Arbore, Gnangatom, Muguji ,Surma, Suri and Ari tribes. Being born in one of the tribes and starting my own tour company, overtime, I have developed a strong connection to many of the tribes and am able to organize unique tours around their traditional events and ceremonies.  Together, we can create the perfect exploratory trip for you, visiting as many places as your time will allow, and organize the perfect accommodation, whether it is in the comfort of a hotel or sleeping in tents alongside a remote tribe.

Not only can we create multi-day tours, but we also offer private day tours. Here are some sample itineraries that we have created for previous clients. 

10-day Omo Valley Exploration Tour (From Addis Ababa)

Day 1:

You will arrive to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, where your private driver and I will pick you up. We will then drive approximately 502 km to Arba Minch where you will stay overnight at Arbaminch Paradise Lodge or a similar hotel of your choice.

Day 2:

In route to Jinka, visit the Konso Villages. Enjoy the magnificent landscapes of hills and views of stone terraces on the drive. This night, we will stay at the Jinka Resort or similar. Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian meal at a local restaurant.

Day 3:

We will have an early start and visit 2 different tribes. First, we will visit the Ari tribes and then visit the South Omo Research Center Museum. In the afternoon, drive to the Mago National Park where you will be able to visit the famous Mursi tribes, known for the large clay plates that the wormen wear in their lower lips. At night, you will have the unique opportunity to camp alongside the Mursi tribe.

Day 4:

Today, you will visit the Hamar tribe and you will be able to experience the day-to-day life of the tribe, such as fetching water. This night, we will stay overnight at the Turmi Busca Lodge or similar.

Day 5:

Experience a unique tribe, the Dassenech Tribe, which is only reached by crossing a river. You will have the option to ride on a traditional boat without a motor which is carved from a large tree trunk. In the afternoon, visit a very remote village of the Hamar tribe. At night, we will camp alongside this isolated tribe.

Day 6:

We will have an early start to this day and visit the Gnayagotom tribes. In the afternoon, visit the Karo tribes. At night, stay at the Turmi Buska lodge or similar hotel.  

Day 7:

Today, we will visit the Benna tribes where we will experience a remarkable night of traditional dance and food. We will camp under the stars at the Benna tribe village.

Day 8:

Visit the Arbore tribe village who farm on the shores of the Woyto River. We will camp under the stars at the Arbore village.

Day 9:

In the morning, we will drive back to Arba Minch Paradise Lodge where you can enjoy a relaxing shower and rest. In the later afternoon, we will sail on a boat on Lake Chamo where we will be able to see hippos, crocodiles, and beautiful aquatic birds. Stay overnight at the hotel.

Day 10:

After a full night’s rest, we will depart Arba Minch for Addis Ababa. Stay overnight at Caravan Hotel, or similar.

 

Short Omo Valley Tour (From Arba Minch)

Duration: 4 days

If you are pressed on time and would like a shorter tour, this sample itinerary of this "Short Omo Valley Tour" may be for you:

Day 1:

You will arrive to Arba Minch Airport, where your private driver and I will pick you up. We will then drive a few hours to Jinka where you will stay overnight at Eco Omo Safari Lodge or a similar hotel of your choice. Enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 2:

We will have an early start and visit 2 different tribes. First, we will see the Mursi tribe, known for the large clay plates that the women wear in their lower lips. Afterwards, we will drive through Jinka to visit the Hamar tribes and visit the Hamar market (if the tour coincides with the market days). This night, we will stay at a hotel or campground.

Day 3:

We will have an early start and visit the Dassenech tribe, a tribe which we will need to reach by crossing a river by boat. Afterwards, we will visit the Bena and Tsemay tribe market in Alduba. This night, experience a unique opportunity of camping under the stars alongside one of the remote tribes.

Day 4:

Drive back to Arba Minch and have a hot shower and lunch before heading to the Arba Minch Airport for your flight returning home.

 

DAY TRIPS AROUND ARBA MINCH:

Nech Sar National Park safari/ Dorize Village

Duration: approximately 9 hours, departure: 8:30 am from Arba Minch

In the morning, enjoy a safari at the Nech Sar National Park. Optional boat sailing on Lake Chamo to see hippos and crocodiles. Drive back to Arba Minch for lunch at an Ethiopian restaurant where you can try many exotic local dishes and a traditional coffee ceremony. In the afternoon drive to Dorize village to visit a weaving company and experience the Dorize culture. Drive back to Arba Minch and finish the trip at 5:45 PM.

Konso Villages, Boat Excursion

Duration: approximately 9 hours, departure: 8:30 am from Arba Minch

Visit Konso villages and meet the Konso village chief. On the way, take in the beautiful landscapes of hills and stone terraces. In the afternoon, sail on Lake Chamo by boat and see hippos and crocodiles. Drive back to Arbaminch and finish the day trip at 5:45 PM.

If you are an athlete or cyclist and want to add an extra bit of adventure to your trip, I also can provide bicycles along your journey. You can enjoy a peaceful and exciting ride along the rough terrains of Omo Valley and hop back into the car when you are tired!
